There is no early version of the book, just of Lavanchy's text, as a thesis. He himself says that he "cleaned it up" somewhat to become a book.
Maybe I should brush up my thesaurus and English writing skills too... Sorry, once again.
Yours,
Pedro MouraPedro Mourahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13850102500313668884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7498791.post-77019934314208317272008-11-18T15:11:00.000+00:002008-11-18T15:11:00.000+00:00Dear Pedro Moura,Thank you for your apology. Lavanchy's 'thesis and earlier version of the book'. M.Lavanchy's thesis has not been published, as far as I am aware, and what is the 'earlier version of the book' that you refer to?

With best wishes,

ann MillerAnn Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14379746659921417497noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7498791.post-81431712544667786402008-11-18T12:18:00.000+00:002008-11-18T12:18:00.000+00:00Dear Ann Miller, First of all, let me start by say...Dear Ann Miller,
First of all, let me start by saying that I have rephrased the whole paragraph in which I quote your book in relation to Mr. Lavancy’s study. In no moment did I wish to make an “insidious and damaging allegation”. In fact, I tried to point out that although there are points in common, which are not surprising (Mieke Bal also quotes the same authors in her many books, especially her “Introduction to Narratology” and so do I in my thesis), I did not wish do make any hurtful claims. I pointed out that your book came at a later date than Mr. Lavanchy’s thesis and earlier version of the book, but attempted no accusations. However, I do realize that the tone and elliptic spirit of the text is not clear and I do understand your feelings. I am deeply sorry for allowing this tone, unusual in my writing.
Moreover, rest assured that I have nothing but a deep respect for your work. Please accept my deepest apologies for using a text construction that lead to this regretful situation. I stand in shame.
Point in fact, I have purchased your book for my school’s library, and it is being used in several classes, including mine. Mr. Lavanchy’s book, on the other hand, is too narrow in some of his analysis, so it belongs to the lists of specialised books but not on the ones being used.
Once again, I feel ashamed to have leaded you and my readers to this hurtful idea, which was not in my view. I have put a post-note on the beginning of the blog in order for readers to learn that I stand corrected. I am indeed sorry. And thank you for your patience, contact and work.
Pedro MouraPedro Mourahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13850102500313668884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7498791.post-12071511833302720122008-11-17T18:41:00.000+00:002008-11-17T18:41:00.000+00:00Dear Pedro Moura,Your webset makes the claim that ...Dear Pedro Moura,
Your webset makes the claim that I fail to acknowledge Eric Lavanchy’s book on ‘Le Cahier bleu’ in the chapter in my own book which analyses this album. Please note that my book on bande dessinée was delivered to the publisher in December 2006, and was published in 2007. Eric Lavanchy's book was published in 2007. I did not read it, and could not have done so, before writing my chapter. Lavanchy’s book came to my notice in 2008, whereupon I ordered it for our library and read it – and indeed put it on the reading list for my students.
I have been teaching Le Cahier bleu, a book which is entirely constructed out of divergent narrative perspectives, since 1997, and I have used it to introduce the principles of narratology to my students. With respect to M. Lavanchy, I did not need to read his (highly interesting) book to discover that Genette, Gaudreault and Jost were specialists on narratology, and I find it bizarre to have to justify the fact that I did so.
I am pretty stunned that you think it is acceptable to print this insidious and damaging allegation, and I ask you to withdraw it.

Ann MillerAnn Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14379746659921417497noreply@blogger.com
